CHAPTER FOURTEEN

My head spun with Dr. Gould’s theory about my glamour. How was that possible? I would have been so young.

I gripped the edge of my desk. “I don’t see how that could have happened.”

“That’s what you’re going to discover.” He looked at the clock on the wall. “Okay, it’s time for your next class. I expect you to read chapters two and three for tomorrow.”

I stuffed my book in my backpack and left the room with the others. Who would have shown me how to use my glamour? The blonde woman in my dreams? I’d never been able to do magic, and my next class was magic with Commander Wyland. All my teammates were light years ahead of me. I wasn’t even sure why I was in the same class. I needed Magic 101 for Babies.

“Good morning,” Commander Wyland greeted us as we entered his classroom. He winked at me. “Glad to see you made it, Chelby. I knew you would.”

I couldn’t help but smile as heat rushed to my cheeks.

The chairs formed a semicircle with a stool off to the side. The commander’s classroom featured four paintings of ornate castles in each of the seasons. I gasped as I realized the snow, leaves, sun, and flowers in the paintings were moving.

Jonas leaned toward me. “Those are the fae courts.”

I almost felt like I could jump inside them. “I’ve never seen paintings move before.”

Commander Wyland stood alongside me. “This won’t be the only thing that surprises you, Chelby. It’s only a little magic. As Jonas said, these are the fae courts. Soon you will discover what court you belong to.” He smiled at me. “Please, sit.”

There was a seat between Kog and Maggie. They tilted their heads toward the empty chair, and warmth spread through me. I’d never had many friends in school. People hardly ever saved seats for me.

I sat, and they both beamed.

Kog’s seat accommodated his size. I hadn’t noticed an orc-sized desk when we walked in. Had it changed size when I wasn’t watching?

Commander Wyland settled on the stool. “All of you possess magic, and you’re all at different levels of using it. You were chosen for this team because of your magic. In this class, you will not only progress your own skills but learn to use magic as a team. Your missions will depend on this ability.”

God, this was too much for me. What if we failed because I couldn’t do shit with magic? Everyone else was great at this. As for me, blowing smoke from my nose wasn’t magic.

“First, we’ll show the team what each of you can do. We will start with the wolves.”

Maggie and Hicks scooted out of their seats, left their backpacks on the table, then did the strangest thing. They took their clothes off. Neither seemed embarrassed, but I squirmed in my seat, looking everywhere except at them.

Kog chuckled. “Shifters always strip before they change into their animal.”

“Oh,” I mumbled, not sure what else to say.

Bones and muscles cracked and twisted.
